Phase 1: ATTACK Disinfection

Phase 2: DEFEND Anti-Microbial Coating

VitalGuard DEFEND™ offers anti-microbial coatings to maximize protection of your business in between disinfection treatments. A surface modifying biostatic agent is applied to high touch areas like door knobs, touch screens, etc. It is safe on all surfaces and electronics, and completely invisible once dry. After application, the treated surfaces will neutralize microbes on contact for up to three months.

What is the VitalGuard process?

First, we ATTACK™ by performing a comprehensive disinfection of the area and its contents. This kills up to 99.999% of all microbes and viruses on the surfaces treated. In the second phase, we DEFEND™ by applying an anti-microbial coating to high risk surfaces that will continue to protect your business for weeks to months after application. Lastly, we VERIFY™ the effectiveness of the treatment using state-of-the-art ATP (adenosine triphosphate) analysis and provide you with the results.

What application methods are used?

Because VitalGuard is so safe, we have a variety of application methods we are able to use including, but not limited to, high volume spraying, ultra low volume (ULV) fogging, electrostatic spraying, and ultraviolet irradiation. The methods employed for your treatment will depend on the unique layout and characteristics of your space and its contents. Because there are no harsh and dangerous chemicals, we can even fog around your staff and customers while they continue to work!

Is any personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the application process?

Because VitalGuard’s products are 100% human and pet safe, food safe, and environmentally friendly, no PPE is actually needed during application even when fogging or atomizing. However, in accordance with current best practices and the interest of public health, the VitalGuard team wears gloves and masks while on site at your business.

What is the ATTACK phase disinfectant effective against?

Is it safe?

Everything used by VitalGuard is completely human and pet safe with no harsh chemicals or skin irritants. ATTACK is NSF certified to be safe for food surfaces even for “no-wipe” application! All products are water based and environmentally friendly, containing no ozone-harming volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

If it’s that safe and environmentally friendly, does it actually work??

Not only does it work, it works BETTER. Harsh and dangerous chlorine-based products (bleach) and alcohol based products (Lysol) are EPA certified to be up to 99.9% effective. Our ATTACK disinfectant is certified up to 99.999% effective.

Why do I care about those 2 extra 9s in the 99.999%, isn’t that a rounding error?

Not in the world of bacteria and infectious disease. The term “bacterial-viral load” is used to describe the amount of a particular virus or bacteria present in a given sample. For illustration, let’s say you have a surface hosting 1,000,000 copies of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (the virus that causes COVID-19). If you were successful in reducing that by 99.9% through cleaning and disinfection, 1,000 copies of the virus would remain. However, if you were 99.999% effective only 10 copies of the virus would remain. That is a massive (100x) difference in the ability for the virus to be transmitted.

How long does it take to dry?

Depending on the surface and application method, application rates are such that surfaces will be dry as quickly as 2 minutes, or a maximum of 10 minutes.

What surfaces is ATTACK safe to use on?

ATTACK is safe for use on both porous and non-porous surfaces. Unlike bleach and alcohol, It is even safe to use on most carpets and upholstery! It is also NSF certified safe for food-contact surfaces

VitalGuard DEFEND™ FAQs

How does VitalGuard DEFEND™ work?

DEFEND is a surface-modifying biostatic coating. A biostatic molecule consists of a polymer “foot” attached to a long chain of carbon-based molecules. When applied to a surface, the foot of the biostatic molecule forms a covalent bond with the surface while the carbon chain points away from the surface like a tiny needle. On a molecular level, a treated surface looks like it is covered in a series of spikes. Through ionic attraction, microbes are drawn to the biostatic molecule and killed when the carbon “spike” penetrates its cell membrane.

What surfaces is DEFEND safe to use on?

DEFEND is safe for use on ALL surfaces and materials including fabrics and electronics. This is extremely important as many of the highest risk areas of a business include touch screens, shared printers and keyboards, etc. Because DEFEND performs a molecular level surface modification, it is not like a paint or coating in the traditional sense. It will not change the look or feel of any surface. It is virtually undetectable once dry, but your results from VitalGuard VERIFY™ testing will show that it is working.

How long will DEFEND protect a surface before a reapplication is needed?

Three months is what the manufacturer is allowed to claim per the EPA registration. In actuality, it really depends on the use of the surface in question. For a very low traffic area (like a ceiling or high wall for example), the biostatic nature of the surface can remain effective for years if the surface is kept clean. However on a very high touch surface, a wearing away of the outermost layer of the surface can occur (the finish coming off a door knob for example) in which case the bacteriostatic layer would also be wearing away over time. Again, DEFEND not adding a new layer, we are modifying the surface of the existing material so the coating is as durable as the underlying material itself. The other thing that can affect the longevity of DEFEND is the cleanliness of the surface. If not kept clean, a patina or layer of dirt/oils or other material could cover the bacteriostatic layer over time and also reduce its effectiveness. For high touch areas, regular cleaning and reapplication every 1-3 months is best practice. The VERIFY phase of ATP testing will be instructive as to the durability of the coating on specific materials and specific environments, removing all the “guesswork” for us and for you.

What is ATP analysis and how does it work?

Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) analysis measures the amount of microbes present on a surface. ATP is a compound found in all living cells. The subject surface is vigorously swabbed to collect a representative sample of the ATP present. The swab is then exposed to a naturally occurring enzyme found in fireflies. The resultant reaction is bioluminescent (light producing). The magnitude of the light produced directly proportional to the amount of ATP present. This bioluminescence is measured by an instrument called a luminometer that provides a reflective light unit (RLU) value for the sample. For context, an operating room is deemed acceptable at or below 50 RLUs. We frequently find pre-treatment levels of high risk surfaces in public areas as high as 6,000 RLUs.

How does VERIFY contribute to the VitalGuard process?

VERIFY allows us to show you results in a hard data format. Without it, there is no way to know for sure if a treatment was effective or to what extent. Were areas missed? Was the proper volume of product used at the right concentration ratios? Was the right application method selected for a given surface? VERIFY removes the guesswork. We test before and after application. The pre-treatment readings help us understand the nuances of your space and specific areas of risk are highlighted by elevated readings. If the post-treatment readings are not reduced to the acceptable range (equivalent to a clean patient care room at a hospital), we adjust and perform the treatment again until we have confirmation. We also use ATP analysis to tell us how quickly re-contamination is occurring in your space, and what frequency we recommend for reapplication of ATTACK and DEFEND.
